Luffa cylindrica
Occasionally also known as sponge cucumber, this annual climbing plant produces interesting fruits.
The unripe fruits of this variety are very delicate and are used in the Asian cuisine similar to the zucchini. Because of its high vitamin C content, the sponge pumpkin is also considered to be particularly healthy. A well supplied with water and nutrients, humus-rich soil in a sunny location allows the plants to climb high. A sponge can be obtained from the ripe fruits, which can be used in the household or as a bath sponge.
